A doctor who tried to escape with a police vehicle while intoxicated and smashed it into an autorickshaw was arrested by Chennai police. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday on Harrington Road.
Muthu Ganesh, 31, a resident of Arakkonam, is reportedly practicing medicine at a private hospital in Kundrathur. At around 1:30 a.m. Monday, he was driving down Harrington Road when police stopped him for a routine breathalyzer test. Initially, he refused to blow into the device and tried to pass by showing his hospital identification card. However, the police insisted that he blow into the breathalyzer, which showed that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The police then asked him to park the vehicle on the side of the road and sent him home in an autorickshaw.
Within a couple of hours, Muthu Ganesh reportedly reached the Ega traffic light on the main Poonamallee road and asked the police to return the car. However, the police refused to return the car and told him to pick it up at the police station in the morning after paying the fine. The doctor then began using his mobile phone to call someone while the police officers were returning to work. It was then that Muthu Ganesh left with the police vehicle parked on the side of the road. Upon realizing this, one of the police officers on duty stopped a motorcycle and chased the vehicle. When the vehicle reached the Gengu Reddy subway, Muthu Ganesh rammed the police vehicle into an autorickshaw, injuring three people.
The policeman who chased Muthu Ganesh arrived at the scene and arrested him. The injured people were sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment and the doctor was taken into judicial custody in Puzhal prison.
