DRDO chief says India can have complete missile system in 4-5 years


The head of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), G Satheesh Reddy, on Wednesday expressed hope that within the next 4-5 years, the agency could assist the Indian armed forces by developing a system full of missiles.

Speaking to ANI, Reddy said: “It will probably take us 4-5 years to work on all these things and make a complete missile system that works for a good amount of range.”

India has tested 10 missiles in the past two months, with the locally developed Rudram-1 being the last. Rudram-1 is an anti-radiation missile that can detect enemy radars and specifically target them, helping to break through the first wave of resistance and create room for more damage.

Along with Rudram, the DRDO has also tested extended-range BrahMos missiles, missile-assisted supersonic antisubmarine torpedo launches, hypersonic nuclear-capable Shaurya and hypersonic technology demonstrator vehicles (HSTDVs).

These missile tests come at a time when India is embroiled in a bitter dispute with China on the Royal Line of Control (LAC). The head of DRDO said the organization can now adapt to the needs of the armed forces. He said, “Now we can develop any kind of missile system that the military wants.”

The assurance made by the head of DRDO also reflects that the defense sector is also focusing on the development of indigenous weapons systems, giving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-sufficient India) a boost.

Reddy also noted that the missiles are part of DRDO’s effort to develop modern weapons for the armed forces when they are involved in a conflict with China. He said: “DRDO has been working on many weapon systems. Even during the Covid-19 period, scientists have been continuously working on it. They have all matured, and so when a system is ready, we will do more development tests.

He further added: “The level of maturity of many technologies is such that we had very successful flights.”
