The army has been searching for a carbine for many years. Their tender recently got stuck in the final stage where a Middle Eastern weapon was selected.
The successful test of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) carbine has paved the way for induction into services. This was the last stage in a series of user tests that have been carried out in extreme temperatures in summer and high altitudes in winter.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the joint venture protective carbine (JVPC) has successfully met the strict performance criteria for reliability and precision, in addition to quality testing conducted by the Directorate General for Quality Assurance (DGQA).
JVPC is a gas-powered semi-bull-pup automatic weapon that has a rate of fire in excess of 700 rpm. The effective range of the carbine is over 100m and weighs around 3.0kg with key features such as high reliability, low recoil, retractable stock, ergonomic design, one-handed firing capability, and multiple picatinny rails, etc. These characteristics make it a very powerful weapon device for counter-insurgency / counterterrorism operations by security agencies.
The carbine has been designed according to the GSQR of the Indian Army, by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a DRDO laboratory based in Pune. The weapon is manufactured in a small arms factory, Kanpur, while the ammunition is manufactured in an ammunition factory, Kirkee Pune.
The gun has already passed the Ministry of the Interior Trials and Acquisitions (MHA) are initiated by the Central Police Armed Forces (CAPF) and various state police organizations.
