The first passenger train at the Bengaluru railway station in nearly two months arrived with about 1,000 passengers from New Delhi on Thursday, and while most were screened and sent to 14-day quarantine to institutional facilities under the SOP, 70 travelers created a riot that refused to be quarantined

The train had left New Delhi at 9.30 p.m. M. Tuesday and arrived at Bangalore station around 7.30 a.m. Thursday, almost an hour late. The Karnataka Health Department had established ten health check-in desks and the passengers were slowly disembarked by bogie.

There was a strong deployment of the railway protection force at the station. Bangalore Urban District DC, G L Shivamurthy, said rooms had been booked at about 90 hotels near the Majestic train station. Passengers willing to stay in hotels had to bear the cost with varying rates (depending on facilities), while separate arrangements were made for those who did not wish to stay in hotels. These people had to remain in institutional quarantine facilities in government shelters run by the department of social welfare. Around 15 BMTC buses were also organized to transport passengers to their respective hotels taking into account social distancing and other hygiene factors.

However, some 50 passengers refused to be quarantined, claiming that they had not been informed of the requirement. A video of them standing in a group and singing “without quarantine” went viral. After much discussion and attempts to convince them by the IGP (Railways) D Roopa failed, she asked the railways to attach an additional bogie and send back those who refuse to be quarantined if they were ready to pay for their tickets.

Karnataka’s primary and secondary education minister, Suresh Kumar, made it clear that all passengers coming from another state must be quarantined for a period of 14 days. “We have also communicated this by SMS to all ticket holders. However, we understand that in this incident, those who were on the waiting list may have had seats and therefore were not informed. We were able to convince some of them to go to institutional quarantine and the rest decided to return. ”

Those who refused to be quarantined should be sent back to the Rajdhani Express, which departs late Thursday night.
