SRINAGAR: Up to 27 operations were launched against terrorists at Kashmir Valley with 64 of them being eliminated, including commander Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Riyaz NaikooJ&K (Kashmir range) police inspector general of police Vijay Kumar said Thursday.
Security forces worked in full synergy with J&K police, and 25 terrorists were also arrested, Kumar said. “The police have been looking for the murdered Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo for the past six months and we have finally managed to locate him,” he told reporters on Pulwama during his visit to the district after Naikoo’s murder.
Referring to the violent protests of some people, seen as Hizb sympathizers, he said: “After Wednesday’s meeting, there was a public order situation at the meeting site in Beighpora. Some people were injured and some suffered gunshot wounds.”
Naikoo’s death has left a serious void at the top for HuM and the possible successors considered are “Dr. Saifullah” or Abu Musaid, a Malangpora resident in Pulwama, who was part of the Burhan Wani group of 12 terrorists and Juniad Sehrai, head of the Geelani faction of Hurriyat who joined the terrorist group in 2018. Sehrai is seen as a prospect due to his connection to the separatists through his staunch father of the Jamiat-e-ideologist- Islami, Ashraf Sehrai.
However, according to intelligence sources, Saifullah, the most wanted terrorist, could be the new face of HuM in the Kashmir valley. It is listed as one of the main terrorists in the “A ++” category. A medical assistant in the past, he made a name for himself by treating wounded terrorists in encounters with security forces, sources said.
IGP Kumar said that restrictions on movement and internet and non-BSNL telephones are necessary to maintain law and order and that they will be reviewed if the situation improves. He said the Naikoo assassination was a great success for J&K police after security forces killed Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH) chief linked to al Qaeda, Burhan Koka, along with two other terrorists in the Shopian district. April 29.
Saifullah started as a guide for terrorists in the Pulwama, Tral, Kakapora and Kulgam areas. He has also been active in the city of Srinagar, as has Sehrai, intelligence sources said. Sehrai occasionally visits his father’s house in Majid Bagh in Bhagat Barzulla in Srinagar and even motivates young people from the area to join Hizb.
Kumar said three of the top terrorist commanders have been killed since January, including Qari Yasir, Burhan Koka and Naikoo of Jaish-e-Muhammad.
The IGP said Naikoo was a highly influential militant commander, who posted videos almost every month to attract youth and instruct his cadre to execute civilians and police.
The Resistance Front (TRF), the IGP said, was not a new outfit but a “shadow of Lashkar.” It was established in August last year after international pressure on Pakistan to stop the militancy.
