President Donald Trump said he will not renegotiate his so-called “phase one” trade agreement with China, despite the country’s failure to comply with agreements to buy additional US exports.
“We are not going to renegotiate,” he said in an interview with the Fox Business Network broadcast Thursday.
While Chinese purchases of American farm products have recently increased, the Global Times, a Communist Party publication, reported earlier this month that Beijing was weighing or renegotiating the deal. The publication said Chinese government officials were angered by the United States’ criticism of China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Trump said Thursday that while he still suspects the outbreak may be related to a virology laboratory in Wuhan, China, he said the Chinese were unlikely to deliberately unleash the pathogen. “I think it is more likely to get out of control,” he said.
The president agreed with Fox Business presenter Maria Bartiromo that China is trying to steal intellectual property and beat the United States with a coronavirus vaccine.
“We can stop them, they are going to try to do it,” he said. “I mean, you can stop doing business with them, that’s one thing.”
He did not elaborate.
