COVID-19 cases: Prime Minister Modi and Donald Trump discussed the coronavirus crisis over the phone last week.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to Donald Trump after the President of the United States thanked India for authorizing the export of hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug believed to be effective in treating the coronavirus.
“India will do everything possible to help humanity fight COVID-19. We will win this together,” Modi tweeted.
Thanking India and Prime Minister Modi, the US President said that India’s help during this crisis will not be forgotten. “Extraordinary times require even closer cooperation between friends. Thank you India and the Indian people for the decision on HCQ. It will not be forgotten! Thank you, Prime Minister @NarendraModi for your strong leadership in helping not only India, but the humanity in this fight! “Trump tweeted on Wednesday.

He later described PM Modi as “excellent” for allowing the export of the key drug. More than 30 countries had requested India to lift the ban on exporting hydroxychloroquine.
“I want to thank Prime Minister Modi of India for allowing us to have what we requested for the problem to arise and it was great. We will remember,” Trump told reporters at his daily White House press conference on the coronavirus.
India, the largest producer of hydroxychloroquine, agreed to lift the ban on exporting the drug to the United States after Trump spoke with Prime Minister Modi on the phone last week. Three Gujarat-based companies would export these tablets to the United States, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said Tuesday, the PTI news agency reported.
On Wednesday, Trump confirmed that the first shipment of a total of 29 million doses of the drug was on its way from three factories in Gujarat to the United States, PTI reported.
“I bought millions of doses … more than 29 million. I spoke to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi, a lot comes out of India. I asked him if he would release him. It was great. It was really good,” Donald Trump told the US channel Fox. News.
Donald Trump had warned of “retaliation” if India did not agree to export hydroxychloroquine.
The United States recorded nearly 2,000 new coronavirus deaths for the second consecutive day, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University. The record high of 1,973 deaths (slightly higher than the previous day’s figure of 1,939) brings the total number of American deaths to 14,695.
India has recorded more than 5,700 cases, including 166 deaths.
