US President Donald Trump not admitting defeat in the recently concluded election is a disgrace, President-elect Joe Biden said Tuesday, stating that his transition plans have not been affected by this and he has begun speaking with world leaders.
“I just think it’s a shame frankly … It won’t help the president’s legacy … I know from my discussions with foreign leaders so far that they are hopeful that America’s democratic institutions will once again be seen as being strong and durable, ”Biden told reporters in Wilmington, Delaware.
Responding to questions from reporters that Trump did not concede the race, Biden hoped that it would all materialize in the end on January 20.
“Between now and then, my hope and expectation is that the American people know and understand that there has been a transition. Even among Republicans … who voted for President, I understand the sense of loss. I get it, ”he said.
Biden hoped those who voted for him and those who voted for Trump would join. “Significantly fewer, but many voted for him, I think they understand that we have to unite. I think they are ready to come together and I think we can get the country out of this bitter politics that we have seen for the last five, six and seven years, ”he said.
The president-elect said the transition has already begun. “We are well on our way. The ability of the administration to not recognize our victory does not change at all the dynamics of what we can do, ”he said, noting that a day earlier he announced his Covid-19 advisory council.
“We are moving forward consistently, putting together our administration in the White House and reviewing who we are going to elect to cabinet posts… and nothing is going to stop that. I am sure that the fact that they are not willing to acknowledge that we won at this time does not have much importance in our planning and what we can do between now and January 20, “he said.
Referring to the congratulatory calls he has had so far with six world leaders, he said that the response has been very comprehensive, energetic, and everyone expects power, from Britain to France, from Germany to Canada, et cetera and Ireland.
“I feel good about the ability to … I said when we announced that the next president will inherit a divided country and a world in disarray. The reception and welcome we have had around the world from our allies and friends has been real and I have several other calls to answer, so I am sure we can put the American back in a difficult situation. place of respect that I had before, ”he said.
Responding to a question, Biden said that access to classified information is useful, but he is not in a position to make decisions on those issues anyway.
“Like I said, one president at a time and he will be president until January 20. It would be nice to have it, but it is not critical. We are simply going to proceed the way we have. We are going to do exactly what we would be doing if he had conceded and said that we won, and we have, so there is nothing that really changes, ”he said.
