DMK criticizes the Union government for the decision not to hold the winter session of Parliament

MP TR Baalu claimed that the government did not consult opposition parties, including the DMK, on the matter, which was not acceptable.

On Thursday, the DMK criticized the Center for its decision not to hold the winter session of Parliament in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and accused it of having a “big brother” attitude by “ignoring” opposition parties. in such matters.

The DMK deputy and his parliamentary party leader TR Baalu said that while issues such as the ongoing farmers’ protest and the border dispute with China had to be discussed in Parliament, “it is very worrying that the central government of the BJP doesn’t want to hold the winter session. “

Baalu alleged that the government did not consult opposition parties, including the DMK, on the matter, which was not acceptable.

The government had previously communicated to the opposition that the winter session of Parliament will not be held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and that the budget session will be convened in January 2021.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi had said that he had contacted the leaders of various political parties and that they “have expressed their concerns about the ongoing pandemic and have opined on the elimination of the winter session.”

In a statement here on Thursday, Baalu said, “On behalf of DMK, I strongly condemn the cancellation of the winter session of Parliament by the BJP government citing the corona pandemic.”

Issues such as the Indochina border row and the farmers’ protest against the three farm laws enacted by the Center were waiting to be discussed, he said, adding that even the Supreme Court had come forward to seek a solution to the ryot agitation, being held outside of Delhi for three weeks.

“When the Supreme Court itself comes forward to seek a solution in the midst of an abnormal situation, it is reprehensible that the elected government has canceled the session,” he said, noting that the Supreme Court had also indicated that the farmers’ protest could soon become in a “national problem”.

Noting that the Center’s talks with protesting farmers “apparently hadn’t worked” and were destined to fail, the supreme court intervened on Wednesday and called for the formation of a panel to break the deadlock, a move ruled out by agricultural leaders. as a solution.

Baalu further said that democracy was the “heart” of the country and was beating due to important debates in parliament, but “Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not seem to realize it.”

“The ruling party and the opposition are the two wheels of India’s powerful democracy. But democratic values are being crushed since the BJP came to power,” he charged.

The Center must stop its “big brother attitude” of ignoring the opposition and “returning” to the path of consensus of opinion and democracy, Baalu said.
