DMK Chairman MK Stalin wrote to US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris in Tamil on Monday, reminding her of her ties to Tamil Nadu and expressing confidence that she will bring more laurels to America during her tenure.
Wishing her and greeting her with ‘Vanakkam’, Stalin said it was a source of pride for the people of the state that the first female vice president of the United States has a link to Tamil Nadu, as her mother came from the state.
He said he chose to write in Tamil because it would make him more happy, his mother’s mother tongue, Shymala Gopalan Harris.
Her victory has given the Dravidian movement a sense of confidence, which believes in an equal society and gender equality, she said in the letter, a copy of which was also posted on her Facebook page.
The head of DMK said Harris’s victory through hard work and her perspective has shown that a woman with Tamil roots is qualified to rule even the United States of America.
“Let your mandate bring more laurels to America and herald the pride of Tamil heritage to the world,” he said, adding that Tamil Nadu looked forward to his visit.
He expressed his happiness for her choice and praised her for her victory.
Kamala Harris’s mother’s family, Shyamala Gopalan, hails from Thulasenthirapuram and Painganadu in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu.
The ancestral villages of Kamala Harris erupted in joy Sunday at the Democratic senator’s elevation and ushered in an early Deepavali with firecrackers and candy to celebrate her victory.
