Bangalore:
The daughter of the head of the Karnataka Congress, DK Shivakumar, today got engaged to the son of coffee baron VG Siddhartha, the founder of Cafe Coffee Day, who died last year. Amartya, the future boyfriend, is also the grandson of Karnataka’s former chief minister and BJP leader, SM Krishna.
In addition to close relatives and friends, the engagement ceremony in Bengaluru was attended by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, BS Yediyurappa.
Politics was temporarily shelved, as photos from the celebrations showed Yediyurappa, sitting in the front row, holding Shivakumar’s hand. Both leaders had recovered from COVID-19 a few months ago.
The Chief Minister, who was also seen greeting Mr. Krishna, posed with the young couple on stage.
Krishna was in Congress for decades and was Minister of Foreign Affairs in the congressional-led government from 2009 to 2012. He switched to the BJP in 2017.
Among other VIPs who attended the engagement was Karnataka Finance Minister R Ashok.
Shivakumar’s daughter, Aisshwarya, 24, was questioned by the Directorate of Enforcement last September in connection with a money laundering case.
DK Shivakumar, 58, is a powerful politician in Karnataka and is the top Congressional problem solver in the state. He was arrested last September in connection with a money laundering case and was granted bail by the Delhi High Court on October 23 last year.
Amartya’s father, VG Siddhartha, was found dead in Karnataka’s Mangaluru in August last year. The death of the 60-year-old man had caused shock and a torrent of grief across the country.
