Dineshwar Sharma, Lakshadweep Administrator and Former Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Dies; PM Modi pays tribute


Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on Friday to Lakshadweep administrator Dineshwar Sharma, who passed away today.

“Lakshadweep Administrator Shri Dineshwar Sharma Ji made lasting contributions to the Indian police and security apparatus. He handled many sensitive counter-terrorism and insurgency operations during his law enforcement career. Anguished by his passing. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti, ”the prime minister tweeted.

Interior Minister Amit Shah said he is deeply distraught after learning of Sharma’s passing.

Deeply distressed to learn of the passing of Lakshadweep administrator Shri Dineshwar Sharma ji. He served the nation with the utmost devotion as a dedicated officer of the Indian Police Service. My condolences to his family in this hour of pain. Om Shanti, ”he tweeted.

Sharma, a Kerala Cadre IPS officer, joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1979. He joined the Intelligence Bureau as deputy director in January 1991.

During his service, Sharma handled a number of assignments, including counterinsurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast.

He was also appointed Interlocutor for Jammu and Kashmir in 2017. In this role, he held dialogues with elected representatives, various organizations and individuals interested in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharma received the prestigious Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1997, followed by the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2003.
