Sharma, a retired Indian Police Service officer from the Kerala cadre, was appointed as an interlocutor for the Center for Jammu and Kashmir in 2017. He held regular discussions with stakeholders to promote peace in the Kashmir Valley until 2019, when central government revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and divided the state into two union territories.

Rivals turned allies, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, who had been detained for months after the Center’s movements in Jammu and Kashmir, offered tributes to the former officer.

“Dineshwar Sharma was a wise and sensible man who understood Kashmir. Unfortunately, he was an interlocutor of a government who was not interested in listening, but that does not reflect either his efforts or his skills. I am sorry to hear about his untimely demise.
