IPL 2020: Did Wrong Short Term Referee Decision Cost Kings XI Punjab The Match Against Delhi Capitals?

Delhi Capitals topped Kings XI Punjab in a thriller to open their account at IPL 2020 with a Super-Over victory at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday in Match 2 of the tournament. Marcus Stoinis left to applause for an all-out effort that saw him fight his way to a 53-run 21-ball knock and claim 2/29 with the ball. Kagiso Rabada then ensured DC got off to a winning start in the one-over tie.

And while all the conversations should have revolved around how the humdinger was won, unfortunately a refereeing error during the match has become the topic of conversation on social media. During KXIP’s chase of DC’s total of 157, referee Nitin Menon called for a shortstop from Chris Jordan at 19 when Jordan and top scorer Mayank Agarwal had brought their team close to the goal.

However, a replay of that particular instance showed that Jordan had completed the race. The footage also hinted that Menon was not on his feet, so he was possibly lost when he noticed Jordan’s bat passing the burst line as he spun for another run. By the way, the England international was the last to force the game into the Super-Over.

Commentators on air at the time, Simon Doull and Sunil Gavaskar, also raised concerns about the wrong decision and called for the decision to be reversed. They were of the opinion that the referees on the field should have been aware of the error and with the technology being used to track even the non-balls of the front foot, it should have been an easy task to reproduce the information, which ultimately did not happen. Menon had recently been appointed to the Elite Panel of Umpires of the International Cricket Council. While Anil Choudary was the other one on the field, the television referee for this match was former Australia fast Paul Reiffel.

Former cricketers, including Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan, took to Twitter to mention the instance and were joined by fans as well.

A solid and comprehensive effort by Marcus Stoinis coupled with Kagiso Rabada’s bowling in the Super Over helped Delhi Capitals beat Kings XI Punjab in a 2020 IPL meet on Sunday.
