Cricket is one of the most popular games in India. But it is also the biggest catalyst for causing toxic misogyny to emerge among men. And the latest example of such toxicity followed the Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders match on Wednesday.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav were on the receiving end of trolls on social media after CSK failed to pursue the 168 goal set by KKR at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

But while violent trolling and abuse of players (and even their wives and girlfriends) is a common reaction from so-called “fans” whenever their favorite team loses a game, the hatred now seems to spread to children and minors. .

In a disturbing incident, while hundreds of people were tracking Dhoni, some tweets and Facebook posts also surfaced threatening Dhoni’s five-year-old daughter. And not just any threats, they were threats of rape and physical violence.

The threats allegedly appeared on the Instagram accounts of Dhoni and his wife Sakshi after the loss on Wednesday.

After Dhoni fell to Chakravarthy 11 (12) in the 17th, CSK still needed 39 of 21. Kedar Jadhav, on the other hand, struggled to center the ball, scoring an undefeated 7 of 12 but at a turtle pace.

The equation came down to CSK needing 26 in its last 6 installments. Ravindra Jadeja made a cameo in the final of Andre Russel’s bowling match, but it was too late for CSK as KKR emerged as the winner by just 10 runs.

This is not the first time, of course, that a cricketer’s family has had to face abuse online due to poor performance on the field. More recently, actress Anuskha Sharma, who is married to current Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, was widely criticized on social media for her husband’s poor performance. Not just trolls, even commentator Sunil Gavaskar criticized Sharma, claiming that Kohli’s poor performance was the result of a lack of practice, as the block had meant that he could only practice with Sharma.
