Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav were on the receiving end of trolls on social media after the Chennai Super Kings failed to chase the 168 goal set by Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
KKR starter Rahul Tripathi set the tone with a brilliant 81 (51) after CSK lost the toss and was asked to pitch first. Chasing a competitive score of 167 placed by KKR, CSK appeared in a cruising position for most of the second inning despite losing to Faf du Plessis early on. Shane Watson’s energetic half-century (50v40) laid the foundation for a fairly comfortable race chase, as CSK needed 67 in 7 overs and his scorecard was 101-2. At the other end was Dhoni, who came out to bat at no. 4 positions.
But the game turned upside down after Watson was fired by Sunil Narine in the first installment of the 14th. Mystery spinners Narine and Varun Chakravarthy operated in tandem as CSK struggled to up the ante.
After Dhoni fell to Chakravarthy 11 (12) in the 17th, CSK still needed 39 of 21. Kedar Jadhav, on the other hand, struggled to center the ball, scoring an undefeated 7 of 12 but at a turtle pace.
The equation came down to CSK needing 26 in its last 6 installments. Ravindra Jadeja made a cameo in the final of Andre Russel’s bowling match, but it was too late for CSK as KKR emerged as the winner by just 10 runs.
While the KKR and SRK teams sitting in the stands were delighted with the result, the fans were particularly upset with Dhoni and Jadhav for not hitting the gas when their team needed it most.
The victory helped KKR win 2 crucial points and secure third place in the table. As for CSK, the Men in Yellow have lost 4 of 6 games at IPL 2020 and have a lot to catch up on.
