A year that has already witnessed a pandemic, floods, forest fires, earthquakes; What else could go wrong? Mahendra Singh Dhoni doing an oopsie with a DRS call.

Over the years, Dhoni’s incredible judgment on the Decision Review System (DRS) behind the stumps has led to the system being renamed the “Dhoni Review System” by its fans. If Dhoni asks for a review, the batter is assumed to be lost. While Dhoni’s DRS calls are mostly in his favor, Saturday’s IPL clash saw a decision against him, much to the surprise of fans.

After a wait of several months due to the coronavirus pandemic that followed, the first 2020 IPL contest between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings finally took place in Abu Dhabi. Once Dhoni won the toss, the Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma were asked to hit first.

The DRS call that stuck out like a sore thumb occurred in the 14th inning of the Mumbai Indians. Launching the fourth installment of the over, Piyush Chawla caught Saurabh Tiwary in front of the stumps as the latter attempted to do a massive sweep.

Chawla and Dhoni immediately made an appeal which was rejected by the referee. But after a short discussion with his roulette wheel, Dhoni decided to go upstairs.

The replays supported the outfield referee’s original decision, as the ball was clearly not off the stump.

That Dhoni got it wrong on a DRS call made IPL fans convinced that 2020 was, in fact, cursed.

But the fact that Dhoni was Dhoni was redeemed later in the game when he was adjudicated for cutting the ball to the goalkeeper on the first delivery he faced in the area. When he challenged the decision, the replays showed a flat line on the Snickometer, proving it’s called the “Dhoni Review System” for a reason.

In the end, Dhoni’s CSK managed to hit the 163 target set by the defending champions with four deliveries and five wickets to spare.
