Despite slowing trajectory, India’s case count could hit 50,000 in eight days

Although the trajectory of the Indian coronavirus has decreased in the past two weeks, it is still more pronounced compared to its Asian peers such as Japan, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

Singapore, which had a much flatter curve than most other countries previously, has seen a renewed wave of new infections that has intensified its curve. Compared to western nations where the virus has claimed more lives, the trajectories of most Asian countries, including India, have been flatter so far.

India’s case count is now roughly double what it was ten days ago. This is a much slower rate compared to early April, when cases doubled every four days. Deaths have also seen a slower increase. The death toll in India for covid-19 as of the previous night was 826, roughly double what it was eleven days ago. Still, at the current compound growth rate, the number of cases could rise to 50,000 in the next eight days and force an already weak healthcare system.

At 6,229, Maharashtra leads in terms of the number of active cases, according to the update from the health ministry on Sunday night. Active cases exclude deaths and recoveries from the list of confirmed cases.

Gujarat has the second highest number of active cases (2,656), followed by Madhya Pradesh (1,787). With 1,702 active cases, Delhi has the fourth highest number of active cases, followed by Rajasthan (1,557). The top five states together account for 69 percent of active cases nationwide, and the top ten states account for 91 percent of all cases.

Nationwide, the active case count was 20,177 as of last night. It is still the first days and the state distribution could change in the coming days. Evidence across states has been uneven, and as evidence increases, more cases may emerge in states where reported cases have so far been low.

In the past seven days, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Gujarat have seen the highest peak in cases among the top ten states with the majority of cases. These three states account for 67 percent of all new active cases in this period. During the same period, deaths have increased the most in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. These three states account for 37 percent of all covid-related deaths in the past seven days.

In the past two days, the districts of Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Indore and Thane have seen the largest increase in nationally confirmed cases. These five districts account for 49 percent of new cases during this period, according to data collected by howindialives.com. Other districts that have seen a sharp increase in the past two days include Pune, Kolkata and the Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh.

So far, 452 districts have confirmed cases in the country. Mumbai (5,399 cases) has reported the highest number of cases nationwide among all districts, followed by Ahmedabad (2,181) in Gujarat. Pune (1,192) in Maharashtra, Indore (1,176) in Madhya Pradesh, and Jaipur (794) in Rajasthan are the other main districts. These top five districts now account for 39 percent of confirmed cases in the country.

Thane (738) in Maharashtra, New Delhi (734), Hyderabad (530), Chennai (528), and Surat (526) in Gujarat are the other top-heavy districts on the top ten districts list. The top ten districts account for 50 percent of confirmed cases nationwide.

Most of India’s hotspots so far have been wealthy urban districts, with wealthier states more affected than the rest ().

The coronavirus case count has crossed 2.9 million worldwide, even as various parts of the world, including India, remain under lockdown to contain the pandemic.
