BHOPAL / BARWANI: Demanding food and transportation, hundreds of migrant workers on Thursday threw stones near Sendhwa on the Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra border.
Thousands of migrants on their way to the northern states from Maharashtra Amid the coronavirus crisis, they are reaching Sendhwa in the Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh.
Eyewitnesses said groups of migrants created a riot, claiming that the government machinery did not make any food and transportation arrangements for them.
In the afternoon, some of them threw stones, but no one was injured in the incident, witnesses said.
Shailesh Tripathi, who arrived in Barwani from Pune, said that the migrants, which included pregnant women, the elderly and children, faced many difficulties in the absence of food, water and transportation.
Large numbers of migrants were waiting for food and transportation at the MP-Maharashtra border for hours, and people from Satna, Rewa, Anuppur and other MP districts were also among them, he said.
Barwani’s collector, Amit Tomar, said the migrants were sent to transit points in different districts by 135 buses from the border.
A stone inlay occurred when some immigrants felt after the buses left that there would be no more vehicles for those left behind, but authorities reassured and calmed them down, he said.
Meanwhile, the state government said some 15,000 migrant workers have been moved from the Sendhwa border (Bijasen Ghat border) to other places in the past three days, while there has been a large influx from Maharashtra.
“The maximum pressure of migrants is faced in Bijasan Ghat, on the Sendhwa (MP-Maharashtra) border. Every day between 5,000 and 6,000 migrant workers arrive,” said a government statement.
Migrant workers were bused free of charge to the Dewas transit point after providing food and conducting medical tests, he said.
From Dewas, they are sent to Sagar, Chhatarpur, Guna and Shivpuri by bus.
Subsequently, migrant workers from other districts of the state are transported to their districts of origin and those of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar They are transported to the UP border, the state government said.
Prime Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called on the migrants not to panic.
“Don’t panic in this hour of crisis, the Madhya Pradesh government will ensure that all migrant workers get home. Arrangements have been made for food, temporary stays, medical check-ups and buses. This agreement will continue until all workers migrants reach their destinations, “said Chouhan.
Additional chief secretary ICP Keshari reported that more than 2.26 lakh of migrant workers were brought back to MP by road from other states, while 86,000 migrants were brought by special trains.
