Delhi To Witness Colder Winter This Year, Scientists Attribute Change To ‘La Niña’

With the temperature dropping every day, the national capital is likely to witness a colder than usual winter season in 2020, according to scientists from the Indian Meteorological Department.

They cited a Pacific Ocean weather phenomenon known as La Niña, which causes a cascading impact on global climate in the winter months, it reports. Hindustan Times.

During La Niña, temperatures in the central Pacific Ocean drop below normal levels, generating wind patterns that can influence temperatures in distant regions. This phenomenon has reportedly been linked to colder than usual winters in northwestern India.

“Both the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 2-2.5 ° C below normal throughout the season. Also, since winter is approaching early with already low temperatures, the minimum is likely to drop to 5-6 ° C starting December 10. This usually happens after December 20, ”Kuldeep Srivastava, director of IMD’s regional weather forecast center (RWFC) told HT.

Daytime temperatures, or highs, will begin to drop in early December. Not only this phenomenon, but also local factors have contributed to the colder days in Delhi. Srivastava explained that due to the clear streak in the city and with a single western disturbance there has been no humidity. And when there are no clouds, the ground cools faster, thus lowering minimum temperatures.

On Friday, Delhi recorded a low temperature of 7.5 ° C, five levels below normal and the lowest temperature in November in 14 years. On Saturday it rose slightly to 8.5 ° C, while the maximum was 24.6 ° C.

In the immediate days, the minimum is reportedly expected to drop further to 7 ° C on Sunday before a western disturbance on November 23 briefly triggers a slight rise. After which, the days and nights will get colder again.
