So even the police officers were shocked when a 26-year-old Amrita sethi emerged as the prime suspect in a kidnapping case. She and her friend Akshit Jhamb (25) have been arrested.
Akshit is a resident of Tilak Nagar and Sethi belongs to Rajouri Garden.
“The southern district police officers located them from Goa after they emerged as suspects in a sensational case of theft of foreign currency reported from Hauz Khas on November 5,” said DCP (south) Atul Thakur.
A money changer named Manoj Sood had submitted an FIR to the police after being attacked by the duo. In his complaint, he claimed that his superior had ordered him to deliver US $ 3,300 to a customer and to get the money in Indian currency transferred to the company’s account in exchange.
Sethi and Jhamb had called the money exchange office and asked them to provide them with the dollar equivalent of around Rs 2.5 lakhs.
Sood spoke to the customer as usual on the mobile number provided and was asked to contact the Panchsheel Club in South Delhi. Sood got there and found a boy and a girl sitting in a car.
“They asked him to sit inside the car and he went to an ATM to withdraw money. They claimed there was some problem with the withdrawal and said they were fixing the money. Meanwhile, they asked the complainant to hand over the dollars, ”added DCP Thakur.
The complainant refused to give them the dollars before receiving the amount in Indian rupees and got out of the car. Suddenly, the defendant snatched the bag containing the dollars and drove away in his car.
After registering a case, two teams were formed under Inspectors Akshay and PK Jha to catch the culprits.
The police team collected CCTV footage near the scene of the incident and analyzed it thoroughly for clues.
The exercise led to the identification of the cars used by the hijacking duo. Details were obtained from the car owner and the team reached the address. The owner of the car informed the police that the car was taken by his son and his two friends. The son was found missing. The police used technical surveillance and tracked him down to Goa.
DCP Atul Kumar Thakur then requested Goa Police Officer Shobhit Saxena to help him catch them.
Sethi and Akshit were tracked down to a five-star hotel in North Goa. The son of the car owner, police said, was not involved in the crime. The defendants said they had blown up the stolen money in Goa and also playing poker in casinos.
