New Delhi:
The national capital reported 7,178 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the highest number of cases since the pandemic hit the city earlier this year. Until now, the number of daily COVID-19 cases in Delhi has never exceeded the 7,000 mark.
For the past three days, Delhi had been reporting more than 6,000 coronavirus cases a day. The second-largest increase in cases occurred on November 4, when the city reported 6,842 cases.
Cases are now at 4,23,831. Government data shows that 64 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, and the death rate is 1.6%, while the recovery rate is 89%.
Air quality in the National Capital Region or NCR has also been a subject of great concern as winter approaches amid the coronavirus pandemic, with Delhi reporting thousands of COVID-19 cases every day.
Poor air quality in winter could have a major impact on health, as experts believe that people with comorbidities are at higher risk, as the virus is known to affect the respiratory system.
The daily positivity rate of the national capital is 12.2 percent, while the national average is 3.9 percent. The center has been asking states to take steps to keep the positivity rate below 5 percent.
On Thursday, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan held a meeting on the Covid spike in Delhi with Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain, Deputy Governor Anil Baijal and other Delhi government officials.
The Union Health Minister called on the Delhi government to increase RT-PCR testing and improve its antigen-RT-PCR ratio, which is currently 77% antigen and 23% RT-PCR.
He said there should be mandatory RT-PCR testing for all those who test negative for antigen, if they develop symptoms afterward. He also expressed concern about the high positivity rate in six districts of Delhi: North, Central, Northeast, East, Northwest and Southeast districts.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday criticized the Aam Aadmi Party government for the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the city, noting that the city could soon become the “crown capital of the country.”
At a meeting of Delhi Government and Interior Ministry officials last week, the rise in COVID-19 cases in Delhi was attributed to festivals, more movement of people, and lax adherence to safe behavior.
India reported 47,638 new COVID-19 cases today, 5 percent less than yesterday. The total number of cases in the country therefore came to 84.11 lakh, with 1.24,985 deaths. However, the total number of active cases fell by 7,189 to just over 5.2 lakh. Overall recoveries stood at 77.66 lakh, an increase of 54,157 from yesterday.
