The Delhi Police Special Cell arrested former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid under the strict Illicit Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Sources told The Indian Express that Khalid was subpoenaed Saturday and asked to join the investigation Sunday at Special Cell’s office in Lodhi Colony. “He had previously been questioned on July 31, when his phone was seized. On Sunday he arrived around 1 in the afternoon and was questioned during the day before being detained at night, ”said a police source.

Police are likely to file a charge sheet against him in the next few days, the source said. It will be presented in a Delhi court on Monday.

According to the police, on March 6 an FIR was registered against Khalid based on information provided by an informant to Deputy Inspector Arvind Kumar of the narcotics unit of the Crimes Section. According to the FIR, Kumar said the informant told him that the riots in northeast Delhi in February were part of a “premeditated conspiracy” allegedly hatched by Khalid, a Dane, and two others associated with different organizations.

That FIR says: “Khalid allegedly made provocative speeches in two different places and called on citizens to take to the streets and block roads during the visit of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to spread propaganda internationally. on what minorities are like in India. ” being persecuted. “

Kumar alleged in the FIR that firearms, gasoline bombs, acid bottles and stones were stored in houses in Kardampuri, Jafrabad, Chand Bagh, Gokulpuri, Shiv Vihar and nearby areas as part of the conspiracy. “The Danish co-defendant was given the responsibility of bringing together people from different places to participate in the violence… Women and children were forced to block the roads under the Jafrabad metro station on February 23 to create tension between the people from the neighborhood. On the same day, the schools of minority children (were) evicted under their premeditated conspiracy, ”states the FIR.

Subsequently, the investigation was taken over by the Special Investigation Team of the Special Cell, which is investigating the alleged conspiracy.

In a charge sheet filed by the Delhi Police Crimes Division against the suspended AAP councilor, Tahir Hussain, the investigating officer has alleged that on January 8, more than a month before the riots, Hussain met with Umar Khalid and Khalid Saifi of ‘United Against Hate’ at Shaheen Bagh’s anti-CAA protest, and Umar asked him to “be prepared for something big / riot at the time of Trump’s visit” and that “he and other members from PFI will help (Hussain) financially. ” That charge sheet was filed in the Karkardooma court.

Khalid’s lawyer, Trideep Pais, had told The Indian Express on Saturday that the accusations against Khalid were “completely false, fabricated and obtained illegally through coercion.”

At a press conference on September 4, Khalid said two types of laws were being followed: one for supporters of the ruling party and one for ordinary people against whom “evidence was fabricated.”

“There is an attempt to rewrite the history of the last six months in front of our eyes and give it an official seal,” he had said.
