For the first time in history, Delhi’s daily Covid-19 cases crossed the 8,000 mark on Wednesday when the capital reported 8,593 cases. The city’s total count is now 45.9975 and the positivity rate has risen to 13.40 percent. In the last 24 hours, 64,121 tests have been performed and 85 deaths have been reported. More than 24,000 people in Delhi are now in home isolation, according to the health bulletin.
On Tuesday, the city recorded 7,830 fresh infections, the highest until yesterday.
The unprecedented increase in the number of daily cases comes at a time when experts have pointed to a general laxity in maintaining social distance. The director of the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Randeep Guleria, has said that the overspread events could have led to the recent increase in the number of cases.
The Delhi High Court detained the AAP government on Wednesday for relaxing security standards for public gatherings. A court of judges Hima Kohli and Subramanium Prasad also noted that the wearing of masks has not been made compulsory in Delhi. The court also asked the government why the number of people allowed at weddings, public transport, etc. has increased.
Since October last week, Delhi has reported an increase in the number of daily cases. In the past two days, it has surpassed Kerala and Maharashtra in the maximum number of daily Covid-19 infections.

The latest serosurvey report, which the government submitted to the high court on Wednesday, found that Covid-19 antibodies were present in 25 percent of the people tested. After reviewing the report, the court noted that the virus has affected almost every home in the national capital. One in four people in the city appears to be infected with Covid-19, the court observed.
