New Delhi:

Delhi recorded more than 4,000 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, a record since the outbreak reached the national capital. The previous highest single-day peak of 3,947 cases was recorded on June 23. The overall coronavirus figure for the city is now 2.01,174, data from the Delhi government shows.

Twenty deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 4,618.

The increase comes days after the government started long-awaited subway services, amid strong precautions. Over the past month, the cash-strapped Delhi government has opened the economy in phases. The bars, one of the biggest income generators, opened their doors today.

Delhi is one of the few states where the coronavirus chart is on an upward movement, contributing to the high daily numbers across the country. From around 1,200 to 1,500 cases per day, the national capital had touched more than 3,000 cases earlier this week. The number of deaths has also been increasing.

The state government has been trying to combat the increase through aggressive testing.

Last week, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal asked officials to increase testing capacity and allow measures such as “tests on demand.” He also ordered tests and trials to be conducted at border points and major construction sites.

Yesterday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that a prescription will no longer be needed for those seeking a test.

Today, India reported a daily increase of 89,706 coronavirus infections in 24 hours, surpassing the 43 lakh mark, data from the Health Ministry showed this morning. The total number of Covid cases in the country now stands at 43.70.128.
