A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his 73-year-old grandmother, hitting her over the head with a hammer, after she refused to lend him money for a New Year’s party, Delhi police said on Monday. .
On Sunday evening, police responded to a call for help from a house in the Shahdara neighborhood of eastern Delhi. They were told that an old woman had been hit on the head with a hammer.
The police rushed to the house to find a gruesome sight: Satish Jolly’s body covered in blood slumped into a chair, a bloody hammer lying on the floor and blood stains on the floor.
Satish Jolly lived on the ground floor of Shahdara’s house in Rohtash Nagar. His eldest son, Sanjay, the first lives with his wife and two children. Manoj, their second son, lives nearby.
According to the police, around 8 pm on Saturday the defendant Karan, Satish Jolly’s eldest son, asked his grandmother to give him money. When she refused, he killed her, stole 18,000 rupees and fled.
Police also said that Karan is in considerable debt. Her father runs a grocery store in Rohtash Nagar.
The body was discovered Sunday morning when Satish Jolly came downstairs and found the door to her mother’s room locked. Alarmed, he called his brother, who said that she was not with him and went to his brother’s house. Then the two of them opened the lock to find their mother’s body.
In the investigation, the police discovered that Karan borrowed a hammer from a tenant in the building, under the pretext of wanting to hang nails. He was arrested after his father telephoned and ordered him to return.
Karan, a business administration student at a UP university in Meerut, told police that he frequently borrowed money from his grandmother and would get angry when she rejected this request.
