NEW DELHI: The Delhi government imposed a nightly curfew in the capital from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on December 31 and January 1 to avoid large gatherings during New Year’s celebrations due to Covid-19.
The night curfew will also remain in effect from 11 p.m. M. From January 1 to 6 a.m. M. From January 2, to ensure that there are such meetings on the second day. No more than five people may gather in any public place during curfew.
However, no restrictions are placed on the interstate or intrastate movement of people and goods during the night curfew.
“Public gatherings are not allowed in public places like Connaught Place, India Gate beyond 11pm on December 31st and January 1st. Only authorized premises are exempt. Large numbers of police will be deployed and book violations will be noted, “said Dr. Eish Singhal, DCP, New Delhi.
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority has approved an order stating that the decision was made in the wake of the threat posed by the UK’s mutant strain of Covid and local cases of coronavirus. It is feared that the celebratory meetings could harm Delhi’s achievements in managing Covid.
“A detailed assessment of the situation has been made in Delhi and considering the threat posed by the mutant strain of Covid-19 in the UK and after observing local incidents of the Covid-19 pandemic in Delhi, meetings are suspected New Years, congregations and public celebrations pose a considerable threat of the spread of the virus and may cause a setback in the appreciable progress made in suppressing the chain of transmission of Covid-19 cases in Delhi, “the order said.
The Interior Ministry in its December 28 notice had warned states and union territories that they may impose local restrictions, including a night curfew, based on its assessment of the situation to contain the spread of Covid-19.
