NEW DELHI: The upcoming Rs 1 lakh crore Delhi-Mumbai motorway project offers huge investment opportunities for investors, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari He said on Saturday urging players to invest in proposed townships, smart villages and services along the way.
The minister also called on industry players to investigate possibilities of establishing groups of leather, plastic, chemicals and other products along the greenfield highway which is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Mumbai to just 12 hours.
“The new alignment of the highway passes through most of the tribal areas and backwards from Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh… There are no industries there. It is time to decongest already developed areas. It offers industry players huge investment opportunities, such as creating groups of leather, plastic, chemicals, etc. “said the minister of road and highway transport.
These groups will assist in the comprehensive development of the backward areas of these states, the chief minister said by interacting with members of the Association of Practicing Engineers, Architects and City Planners (PEATA) of India through videoconferences.
Gadkari, who also owns the MSME portfolio, urged urban planners and others to consider investing in smart cities and smart towns, along with 2,000 road services and logistics parks that are being planned along this road.
He also emphasized the need for low-cost housing projects along the highway, while using waste materials without compromising the quality front.
“The government plans to complete this highway within three years and 32 of the total 60 packages (contracts) for this Rs 1 lakh crore highway project have already been awarded,” he said.
Last month, the minister had said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) was also studying the possibility of building a smart township there, and a cabinet note was issued for this.
Gadkari had said that the government saved around Rs 16,000 crore on land acquisition alone in the project in a new alignment and will pass through distant and backward tribal areas of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
The minister suggested that a large number of highway services and other projects can be carried out along the highways that mark the beginning of the development of the areas.
There are several opportunities in logistics parks, smart cities, smart towns, cold storage, road building where developers can and should focus and come up with an innovative idea to start an economic activity, he said.
