The BJP government’s ambitious project to connect Delhi to Mumbai via a sign-free highway is on the fast track. The 1,200 km long motorway is expected to reduce travel time by at least 8 hours. Currently, driving from Mumbai to Delhi or vice versa takes approximately 20-24 hours traveling through a 1400 km long NH48.
However, according to estimates, the new highway, which is 1,200 km long, will reduce travel time to just 12 hours, saving 8 to 10 hours in travel time. Not just travel time, according to a report, the project itself is running in a fast lane and is expected to be completed in 2022, 2 years before the scheduled 2024 deadline.
Union Road and Highway Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is closely monitoring the project that will unite India’s financial and political capitals and last year mentioned that the project’s land acquisition was almost complete.
“We have allocated Rs 1 lakh crore for the construction of the Delhi-Mumbai high-speed road corridor, which will connect Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. It will be the longest axis control highway and will help the agricultural and industrial growth of these states.” Gadkari said.
“We have been building 30km roads every day. We have completed KMP, KGP and other national road projects such as Dwarka Highway, Ring Road in Delhi and South Peripheral Highway (SPR) are under development,” he said. Gadkari.
The project will have 8 lanes, will be completed at Rs 82,514 crore and will have provisions for 75 rest lanes along with highway shopping centers at 50 km intervals on both sides of the highway.
