New Delhi: Protocols for social distancing and other safety regulations are being worked out so that passengers use the station’s trains and facilities whenever services are ordered to resume, authorities said Wednesday.
The Delhi metro has been closed since March 22, when the Janata curfew was imposed in the wake of the new coronavirus pandemic.
The Delhi Metropolitan Railway Corporation (DMRC), in a statement, said it is working on detailed cleaning and maintenance procedures in light of the pandemic.
“The exercise will be extremely comprehensive as it involves cleaning and maintaining 264 stations, more than 2,200 coaches, and more than 1,100 escalators and 1,000 elevators, etc.,” he said.
In addition to this, a protocol for social distancing for passengers is being worked on once they start using the trains and other metro facilities again.
However, the opening date for the Delhi Metro has not yet been finalized and the public will be notified in due course, according to the statement.
All of the subway systems, including signaling, electricity, rolling stock and runways, will need to be thoroughly tested before services start to ensure total passenger safety, he said.
Delhi metro authorities have already trained their cleaning staff and other staff to adhere to the improved safety regulations to prepare them to do their jobs each time services are ordered to resume, officials said on Tuesday.
The total number of coronavirus cases in the national capital on Wednesday increased to 7,998 with 359 new cases, while the number of deaths increased to 106.
