NEW DELHI: Traffic police warned that traffic movement may be affected during the weekend as the protest farmers have threatened to block the Delhi-Jaipur Highway and take over the Yamuna Highway on Saturday. Arrangements are being made to deter farmers and facilitate progress for motorists in places likely to be negatively affected by the protests.
About 2,000 police officers will be deployed on Gurgaon’s borders with Delhi and at multiple points on NH8, the highway linking Delhi and Jaipur, both to maintain law and order and to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. Three battalions of the Rapid Action Force will also be on standby in Gurgaon, while each border point will have two tear gas teams, riot control vehicles, firefighters, cranes and ambulances. “The arrangement we have made should help us deal with any kind of situation,” said Gurgaon Police Commissioner K Rao.
Azad Khan, Coordinator, Bharatiya Kisan Union (South Haryana) said that more than 1,000 farmers from Rajasthan are heading to Delhi by tractors and trucks, while hundreds of Nuh will join them at the Shahjahanpur border. “We will march to Delhi. If the authorities and police stop us, we will sit down to protest at the Haryana-Rajasthan border, ”he said.
In Delhi, traffic police held a meeting on Friday to review the special arrangements for the weekend, especially at the borders where farmers have been protesting for 16 days. In a series of tweets, the police said that the Tikri and Dhansa borders were closed to the movement of traffic, while the Jhatikara border was open only to two-wheelers and pedestrians. Traffic was also being diverted from the Mukarba Chowk and GT Karnal road. Those who wish to go to Haryana can pass through the borders of Jharoda (only single carriageway), Daurala, Kapashera, Badusarai, Rajokri NH 8, Bijwasan / Bajghera, Palam Vihar and Dundahera.
In another tweet, the police said: “The borders of Singhu, Auchandi, Piau Maniyari and Mangesh are closed. NH44 is also closed. Take alternate routes through the toll tax borders of Lampur, Safiabad, Saboli and Singhu School. Avoid the outer ring road, GTK highway, NH-44 “.
On Friday, in addition to the borders, morning congestion was noticeable at ITO, Dhaula Kuan, Palam flyover, IITDelhi crossing, Rajouri Garden and near Sarai Kale Khan.
