The Delhi government removed Dr. JC Passey from the position of Medical Director of Lok Nayak Hospital on Wednesday. Dr. Suresh Kumar, from the hospital’s medicine department, was named new head of the hospital.
The order comes less than a week after the Lok Nayak hospital focused on reporting around 47 deaths until May 6, when the government had reported only five deaths at the hospital and only 66 across the city. The issue of the discrepancy in deaths reported by Delhi’s official health bulletin and hospital records was highlighted after that.
The three-member death audit committee is now working to clear back work.
Only four of the city’s designated Covid-19 hospitals have reported around 173 deaths, but the city’s total in the Delhi health bulletin on Wednesday was 106.
“The Center earlier this month sought clarification on why he was appointed director over the age of 62. This has nothing to do with the Covid-19 deaths,” said a Delhi government official.
On May 4, the central government requested clarification from the Delhi government on the appointment of Dr. Passey to an administrative position, as he is over 62 years old. Dr. Passey was a special Delhi government appointment in late March for Covid-19 management at Lok Nayak Hospital, which is the largest Covid-19 hospital in the city and cares only for people with the viral infection .
With 20 more deaths from coronavirus (Covid-19) disease reported on Wednesday, Delhi recorded the largest single-day increase in Covid-19 deaths for the second day in a row.
Delhi reported 13 Covid-19 deaths on Tuesday. But even with the sudden increase in deaths, Delhi’s death rate remains just over 1%, up from the national average of 3.1%.
On Wednesday, Delhi recorded 359 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the city’s count to just two less than 8,000.
