Delhi High Court Rejects Guilty Pleas Contesting AAP Government Ban on Holding “Chhath Puja” in Public Places | India News

New Delhi: Amid surge in coronavirus cases in the national capital, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday (Nov 18, 2020) refused to interfere with the Delhi government’s ban on organizing ‘Chhath Puja’ in public places like ponds and banks.

A court of judges Hima Kohli and Subramonium Prasad dismissed a petition for a trust, challenging the Nov. 10 order of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) not to allow any gatherings in public places for ‘Chhath Puja’ for the November 20.

The high court said the third wave of infection was already underway in Delhi and allowing a large gathering would result in people becoming ‘super spreaders’.

The magistrate said: “Today, such a request is denied by the reality of the terrain,” adding that the petitioner should have taken into consideration the current circumstances in the national capital.

The trust had reportedly requested permission to hold a gathering of 1,000 people for the Chhath Puja celebrations.

It should be noted that Delhi, which has reportedly been hit by the third wave of COVID-19, witnessed more than 7,000 cases on November 6, followed by a single-day record peak of 8,593 cases on November 11.
