The Delhi government has considered cutting kindergarten admissions for the 2021-22 academic session, as there is “ little chance ” that schools will reopen before July in view of COVID-19. Senior government officials have discussed the option and are likely to propose it to private schools, Indian Express reported.

Under the proposal, Delhi schools will admit two batches in 2022-23, one in the nursery and one in the kindergarten. Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia said there is very little chance that schools will reopen before July. “Even if we start vaccinating people in February, we will only be able to vaccinate a considerable amount in July. There is no possibility of reopening schools before that. We also have to see how the exams will be carried out without putting teachers and students at risk, ”Sisodia said.

Speaking about the proposal, a senior official said that admission to both kindergarten and kindergarten will be taken in the 2022-23 session. “Schools can admit students to both kindergarten and kindergarten for the 2022-23 academic session, as there will be openings in both grades. Considering the unpredictable nature of the Covid virus, the youngest children will be the last to go to school in any case. In such a situation, having another group of young children whose entire academic year will be online is a bit unfair to both them and their parents, ”said the senior official.

Schools across the country have been closed since March due to COVID-19 emergency shutdown. “There are a lot of students who started kindergarten in April this year, but everything was online. They have not interacted with their teachers or their peers, and have only seen them on screen. In formative classes such as nursery and kindergarten, children learn to interact with each other and with the world to be prepared for what lies ahead. They have not had this opportunity, despite starting school, ”the official said.

The Delhi government regulated the admission criteria and schedule for kindergarten admissions. The guidelines are generally published in November. However, so far there has been no discussion.
