New Delhi:
Delhi Deputy Governor Anil Baijal has allowed Joint Entrance Exams (JEE) and National Entry and Eligibility Test (NEET) to be conducted in the city, despite objections raised by the Delhi government citing the safety of students amid the COVID-19 pandemic, sources said. on Saturday.
At the latest Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) meeting, which was attended by LG and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a proposal was put forward to conduct the JEE and NEET exams in Delhi, they said.
“The Delhi government in its dossier sent to LG by the finance minister on Saturday recommended not to take the exams in view of the safety of the students.”
“The Prime Minister of Delhi (Arvind Kejriwal) had also decided not to retain JEE and NEET due to the pandemic. However, the LG returned the file reversing the Prime Minister’s decision and allowing the tests to be carried out.” the sources in Delhi said. the government said.
Delhi’s Chief Deputy Minister Manish Sisodia, who is also the city’s government minister of education, had written earlier this week to the Union’s Education Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, requesting that he postpone exams given the growing number of cases of COVID-19 in the country.
He had demanded that the medical and engineering entrance exams be postponed and that the Center work on alternative methods of selecting students.
“They (the Center) are saying that the protocols will be followed. Following the same protocols, which the Center wants 28 lakh students to follow, thousands of Indians have tested positive for COVID-19,” Sisodia said.
The joint (main) entrance exam and the national entrance and eligibility test (NEET-UG) will be held in September as scheduled, officials from the Ministry of Education have maintained.
Last week, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition to postpone the two exams amid a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases, saying that a “precious” academic year of students “cannot be wasted” and that the life has to go on.
While a total of 8.58 lakhs of candidates have registered for the JEE-Mains, 15.97 lakhs of students have registered for the NEET.
Increasing the number of test centers, an alternative seating plan, fewer candidates per room, and staggered entry and exit are some of the steps the National Testing Agency will take to safely take the NEET and JEE in September.
