Delhi Court grants Ariz Khan the death penalty

Previously, the police requested the death penalty for Khan, allegedly associated with the Indian Mujahideen terrorist group, saying that it was not just any murder, but the murder of a law enforcement officer who was a defender of justice.

Additional prosecutor AT Ansari, who appeared before the police, said the case attracts an exemplary punishment, which is capital punishment.

Khan’s lawyer opposed the death penalty.

The court had said on March 8 that it was “duly proven that Ariz Khan and his associates murdered a police officer and shot the police officer.”

Inspector Sharma from the special police cell was killed during the 2008 meeting at Batla House in Jamia Nagar in South Delhi.

A trial court sentenced the Indian mujahideen terrorist Shahzad Ahmed in July 2013 to life imprisonment in connection with the case. His appeal against the verdict is pending in the superior court.

Ariz Khan had fled the scene and was found guilty. He was arrested on February 14, 2018, and faced trial.

The police had previously claimed that Ariz Khan was present at Batla House, along with four other people, and had managed to get the police to escape during the 19 September 2008 encounter in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, in which two Indian Mujahideen terrorists they were assassinated and like many arrested.

Two suspected terrorists, Atif Ameen and Mohammad Sajid, were killed while two other suspects, Mohammad Saif and Zeeshan, were arrested earlier.

The incident took place a week after five serial explosions hit Delhi on September 13, 2008 in which at least 30 people were killed and more than 100 injured.

Special Cell Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma was martyred during the 2008 Batla House meeting.
