Before the match against RCB, Delhi took a big hit as spinner Amit Mishra was ruled out of the tournament due to a finger injury. In place of Mishra, Axar Patel had a shot at the team led by Virat Kohli, and responded impressively with 2-18 from his four overs.
“That’s one of the beauties of this particular Delhi team. Even when my shoulder was dislocated, Amit came in and played the role. Now he’s injured, so Axar has come in and played the role. There’s enough strength on our bench. And sometimes when it comes to the IPL, the people that come out of that bank become very important. That bank is probably good enough to be another IPL team, it has a lot of quality, “Ashwin said during the conference of post-game press.
“I think we will miss Amit very much. In the future, we will try to keep him happy at home.”
Speaking about Patel’s performance, Ashwin said: “Sometimes we tend to zoom in on images and stats in T20 Cricket. Sometimes I feel like it’s a bit overrated in a game like T20 because it’s kind of like football, where people are playing their roles and one of those people is Axar. It always goes unnoticed. He increases the pressure for someone else to capitalize and take the window.
“These are the heroes that are appreciated inside the dressing room for us at Delhi Capitals and Ricky Ponting is very particular about it. When they appreciate you, people want to keep their roles.”
RCB failed to chase 196 runs and was restricted to 137/9. None of his hitters got going, excpet captain Virat Kohli, who scored 43. AB de Villiers had a bad day as he only managed to score nine runs. Anrich Nortje sent him back to the pavilion.
For Delhi, Kagiso Rabada was the bowler’s choice with figures of 4-24. Ashwin conceded just 26 runs of his four overs and also got Devdutt Padikkal’s crucial window.
The victory brought Delhi to the top of the table with four wins and eight points from five games.
“I think we have a good side. Everyone is raising their hands. At first I thought we were a little rusty going into the tournament. Even for me, it has taken me five games to beat the full quota of four overs; it has been quite an interesting year I threw four overs for the first time at this year’s IPL. The positive thing is that there is still a lot of room for improvement, so I think we will reach the end of the tournament. Ashwin said.
Batting first, DC scored 196/4, with Prithvi Shaw and Marcus Stoinis scoring 42 and 53 respectively. Stoinis reached the fold with Delhi at 90/3 in 12th and the Australian off-roader went on to score a half-century of rapid fire with the help of six fours and two sixes.
“I don’t think we need to talk about hitting technique here … Everyone has a unique technique. Prithvi is a special talent. When he hits the ball, he makes a lovely sound with his bat. He has been hitting the ball wonderfully in the last two. games, “Ashwin said.
“Marcus Stoinis has gotten really strong. He has been playing IPL for different teams over the last few seasons. Obviously, he has improved in the last few years and finally a really excellent Stoinis has come to Delhi Capitals … He has been good in both games. we’ve played in Dubai so I hope to keep my fingers crossed for him. ”
