NEW DELHI: A Delhi mounting panel decided Tuesday to issue a “final notice” for Facebook after no representative appeared before the committee that is hearing accusations against the social media giant.
During the procedures, Peace and Harmony Committee President and AAP MLA Raghav Chadha He said the failure of any Facebook representative to appear before the panel was not only a “contempt” of the assembly, but also an “insult” to the 2 million people of Delhi.
The panel had sent a notice to the vice president and CEO of Facebook India. Ajit mohan last week, asking her to appear before him on September 15 in connection with complaints about the social media giant’s alleged deliberate inaction to curb hateful content in the country.
Facebook’s lawyer, in a response to the committee’s notification, said the matter was under consideration by Parliament, which is “unsustainable,” Chadha said. “The fact that Facebook did not appear before the committee shows that it is trying to hide its role in the Delhi riots.”
After consulting with other committee members, Chadha decided to send a final notice to Facebook.
“In accordance with the principle of natural justice, we should give the vice president and managing director of Facebook one last chance to appear before the committee. Still, if he does not come, the committee will not give up using all its powers, including the steps coercive, “he added. he said.
The assembly panel hearing follows a Wall street journal report claiming that one of Facebook’s top policy executives in India weighed in on internal communication to stop a permanent ban on a Telangana BJP legislator after he allegedly shared community-laden posts.
Last month, Facebook said its social media platform bans Hate speech and content that incites violence, and these policies were applied globally without regard to political affiliation.
“While we know there is more to be done, we are making progress on the application and are conducting regular audits of our process to ensure fairness and accuracy,” said a Facebook spokesperson.
