The national capital ranks third on the list of states and territories in the Union with the most contaminated sites, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board.
There are 112 sites in India contaminated by toxic and dangerous substances. Additionally, there are 168 sites that may be contaminated but require investigation and confirmation, according to the CPCB.
Odisha tops the list with 23 contaminated sites, followed by Uttar Pradesh (21) and Delhi (11).
The Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfills, the industrial areas in Jhilmil, Wazirpur, New Friends Colony, Dilshad Garden and Lawrence Road are among the 11 contaminated sites in Delhi.
In addition, there are 12 “probably contaminated sites” in the national capital.
According to the Union Ministry of the Environment, “contaminated sites” are delimited areas in which “the components and characteristics of toxic and dangerous substances, caused by humans, exist at levels and conditions that pose existing or existing threats. imminent to human health and the environment. “

Remediation work has begun to clean up 14 contaminated sites in 7 states following the instructions of the National Green Court.
These states include Gujarat, Jharkhand, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.
Contaminated site remediation involves cleaning up contaminated media (soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment) by adopting various in-situ or ex-situ cleanup technologies to predefined remediation target levels for each identified constituent.
