A spotted deer that crashed into the roof of a shack in Powai shortly after midnight was rescued by animal welfare groups a couple of hours later on Sunday.
Residents of the Powai slum were awakened shortly after midnight when the deer crashed into the roof.
The incident occurred around 1.30 in the morning at Mahatma Pule Chawl, near Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). An inhabitant of the slums claimed that a deer was chasing the deer.
A seven-member rescue team that includes animal welfare groups from the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW), the Plant and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS-Mumbai), and forest officials rescued the animal in a couple of hours.
“We are not sure of the cause of the sudden drop, although there are several rumors. It is an unusual rescue, ”said Jitendra Ramgaokar, deputy forest conservator (Thane). “The deer fell from a height in the settlement at the base of a hill. The animal was in shock for a time, and was unable to move inside Karan Parihar’s (a resident of the slum) for some time. “
The chital, or spotted deer, found in SGNP, was taken to the rescue center. “The deer had only minor injuries. A full check will be carried out and, depending on the presence of your herd in the same rescue area, the animal will be released, “said Vijay Barabde, senior forest officer at SGNP.
This is the second such incident in less than a month. Another spotted deer that jumped off a hill at Hanuman Tekdi on April 21 died from the impact.
“In both cases, the animals were being chased by a predator and jumped off the hill to save themselves,” said Aaba Kubal, a resident of the slum who reported to animal rescue groups.
