Deaths in Sathankulam Custody: CBI Files Charge Sheet, Says Father and Son Duo Died After Tortured by Police Chennai News


CHENNAI: The CBI, which is investigating the deaths in custody of P Jeyaraj and his son J Beniks in Sathankulam in the Tuticorin district of Tamil nadu, has named nine policemen as defendants: suspended Sathankulam inspector S Sridhar, suspended Deputy Inspectors K Balakrishnan and P Raghuganesh, suspended Police Chief S Murugan and A Samadurai and suspended officers M Muthuraja, S Chelladurai, X Thomas Francis and S Veilumuthu.
Charges have been brought against him in the sections of the IPC for murder, wrongful confinement and others.
The CBI presented the charge sheet in a designated court, according to an official statement.
The CBI said its investigation revealed that the father-son duo were arrested on the night of June 19 and tortured at the Sathankulam Police Station by the defendants both in the night and the night in between, as a result of which both they succumbed to the injuries they had sustained and died on the night in between June 22 and 23.
The IWC registered two cases on July 7, related to allegations of deaths in custody of the duo who were merchants.
A CBI team had continuously camped in Madurai and worked tirelessly on cases even despite the odds of a Covid-19 pandemic, he said.
The CBI said the role of other individuals in the case was continuing to be investigated.
