NEW DELHI: How to count the votes for the elections District Development Council (DDC) of Jammu and Kashmir takes place on Tuesday, the results would be a significant milestone for the BJP, which has witnessed something of a dream streak so far in recent months.
If the BJP’s performance is decent, the party can claim success in the recent elections. On the contrary, if the People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration performed better than the BJP, the latter’s monster would stop short.
In the Bihar assembly elections, the BJP seat increased significantly. It became the second largest party after the RJD led by Lalu Prasad. While RJD won 75 of the 243 seats in the assembly, the BJP was just one seat behind it at 74. Together with its partner NDA, the BJP once again formed a government in the state.
In the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election as well, the BJP significantly improved its performance by coming second to the ruling TRS. He left behind AIMIM led by Asaduddin Owaisi.
Previously, he had won the Dubakka by-elections by taking the seat from TRS.
The BJP also retained its seats in the Uttar Pradesh by-elections of the assembly. In addition, it beat the Congress in the electoral elections of the state of Madhya Pradesh.
In Rajasthan’s civic elections as well, the BJP won more seats than the ruling Congress.
The last feather on BJP’s cap was the Kerala elections of local bodies. Here too, the party made unprecedented inroads into state politics. Not only did he improve his tally from 1,200 seats in the previous 2015 elections to 1,600 this time, he also made inroads into the strongholds of top congressional leaders, such as former Defense Minister AK Antony, the former chief minister. Oommen Chandy, opposition leader in the Kerala assembly Ramesh Chennithala and Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor.
He was victorious also in Sabarimala which falls in Pandalam. Sabarimala was the epicenter of protests organized by the party along with other Hindu groups against the entry of women of menstruation age into the temple.
The results of the DDC elections in Jammu and Kashmir are important to the BJP also because they are the first elections after the annulment of Article 370. In a way, it would be a referendum on the passing of the BJP-led NDA government.
