Hubballi: Out of nowhere, the Davangere and Belagavi districts have become Karnataka’s crown hot spots. Of the 48 new positives registered in the state on Friday, more than half were from these two districts.
The troubling aspect of this for health officials is that almost all of these samples were taken from people before the relaxation of the May 4 closure, not after. Authorities are now concerned about the effect a lighter lockdown regime could have on the spread of the epidemic.
The Belagavi border district now has 83 cases of coronavirus plus one death. Davangere has witnessed a sudden increase in positive cases to reach a similar number with four deaths occurring in the span of just one week. In both districts, the virus has spread to people of all age groups, from 5 to 60 years old.
Exasperated that people have not been following the social distance, Davanagere’s deputy commissioner, Mahantesh Bilagi, has established a brutal prison regime in the city of Davanagere, sealing it almost entirely. The sale of liquor continues prohibited until May 17.
“Harsh measures have become unavoidable. Liquor sales are banned in 45 districts of the Davangere Municipal Corporation and in 15-20 villages in the taluk. All commercial establishments will remain closed in the city. People should stay indoors.” , said. Bilagi
In Belagavi, the crown’s attention is on a village, Hirebagiwadi in Belagavi taluk, where there are no less than 47 cases.
Hirebagewadi has a population of 35,000. The virus was brought to the village by a 20-year-old who attended the Tablighi Jamaat religious congregation in Nizamuddin in New Delhi. With 46 more positives appearing in the Quich succession, officials are preparing to test everyone in Hirebagewadi.
