Hyderabad:
A boy from Uttar Pradesh, who went missing five years ago, was tracked to a child welfare home in Assam and reunited with his family, thanks to the Telangana police facial recognition tool, DARPAN.
The boy is now 13 years old.
An emotional video showing the child’s mother and father crying and hugging has won hearts online. The 2.20 minute clip ends with a visibly calm boy identifying his mother.

Som Soni had disappeared from the Allahabad Handia on July 14, 2015 and was found a week later in Goalpara of Assam. He was taken to a child welfare home in the district, where he has remained ever since.
DARPAN, the facial recognition software launched in 2018, maintains a database of children and people housed in various rescue homes across the country.
“The Crimes and Crimes Tracking Network System has been used to match the photos of missing children in the FIRs with those on the children’s institutions tracking portal. With the face matrix, the software can match precision even after several years “Additional Telangana DGP (Women’s Safety), Swati Lakra explained.
