Australia starter David Warner has been excluded from the remaining white ball games against India after injuring his groin in the second ODI. D’Arcy Short has been named his replacement in the T20I series that follows.
Also, Pat Cummins has rested from the rest of the white ball games that include one ODI and three T20Is. The 27-year-old, fresh off an IPL campaign for the Kolkata Knight Riders, has been below his usual best in the two ODIs against India so far. He ran out of the gate in the first before going 3 of 67 in the second.
“Pat and Davie are central to our plans for the Test Series,” said head coach Justin Langer. “Davie will work through his injury rehabilitation and, in Pat’s case, it is important that all of our players are managed well to keep them mentally and physically fit during this challenging summer.
“The priority for both of us is to be fully prepared for one of the largest and most important Home Test Series we have played in recent years, especially with World Test Championship points at stake.”
Short’s last T20I was incidentally against India in Bangalore in February 2019. He was on hold for this summer at home and had been training with the team since flying from Perth to New South Wales following the COVID-19 outbreak in Adelaide. .
Marcus Stoinis, who was left out of the second ODI due to lateral tension, remains with the team. Meanwhile, off-roader Mitchell Marsh will not join Australia’s ‘A’ team as planned. He will now continue his rehabilitation from an ankle injury sustained while playing in the IPL and will make his return with the Perth Scorchers in the BBL. No substitute has been named for him in team ‘A’.
