A 22-year-old Dalit woman died after two young men allegedly gang-raped her in a Balrampur village in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, police said. The victim was cremated Wednesday night after the autopsy by a panel of four doctors.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when the girl had gone to enter a university near her village, but did not return home until late at night, said Balrampur Police Superintendent Dev Ranjan Verma. Later, the girl returned in a rickshaw with a glucose drip in her hand as relatives searched for her.
Verma said that family members stated that the girl’s condition was not good, so they took her to a nearby hospital and then to the Balrampur district hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
While the family alleged that the girl’s hands and legs were fractured, police officers claim that such injuries were not confirmed on post-mortem examination.
The defendants were arrested after an FIR was registered following a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, authorities said. Sections 376-D of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for gang rape and 302 for murder have been slapped against the two defendants and further investigation is under way, the police officer quoted above added.
The SP said that the case will be sent to a fast track court and that the strictest measures will be taken against the defendant.
