To prevent the coronavirus from spreading in the city, officials declared a night curfew in Ahmedabad. Starting on November 20, there will be a daily curfew in the city from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The curfew will continue until the COVID-19 situation in Gujarat improves, authorities said.
Gujarat reported 1,281 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, bringing its COVID-19 count to 1,901,642. The deadly virus has killed 3,823 people in the city so far. The government plans to increase the number of daily tests to detect new cases.
“In Ahmedabad, we have allocated 7,279 beds in seven government and 76 private hospitals for COVID-19 patients,” said Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Kumar Gupta. “Of these, 2,848 beds, or 40 percent, are still available,” Gupta said in a statement. At least 2,347 beds are available in government hospitals and 501 beds in private hospitals, it added.
About 25,000 “crown warriors”, including doctors and paramedics, have been deployed to tackle the pandemic in the city, Gupta said.
The number of micro-containment areas in the city increased to 100, according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The sudden spike was the result of people’s movement in festival season, Gupta said. Another reason for the increase was that people do not wear masks and follow social distancing, he said.
About 500 coronavirus patients from other districts, as well as neighboring states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, are receiving treatment at hospitals in Ahmedabad, according to the statement.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has established 200 centers across the city where people can get tested for free, the official statement added.
“The coronavirus vaccine will be available in the coming months and it is estimated that between 400 and 500 million doses will be available to between 25 and 30 million people in July-August,” the Union’s health minister said Thursday, Harsh Vardhan.
