Dadra and Nagar Haveli MP found dead in hotel room in Mumbai

Mohan Delkar, a 58-year-old MP from the Dadra and Nagar Haveli Union Territory (DNH), was found dead in a room at the Sea Green South Hotel on Marine Drive on Monday.

Police said his body was found hanging from the ceiling fan around 2 pm and that a note of more than four pages, written in Gujarati, was recovered from his room.

In the note, Delkar has blamed several people, including a high-ranking politician, for his death by suicide.

Delkar, a former congressional legislator and currently an independent DNH MP, was in Mumbai to arrange for a JD (U) delegation coming from Bihar to Mumbai and then to Silvassa, sources said.

Sources close to the family said he usually stayed in his own flat while in Mumbai. “This is the first time I have booked a hotel room for him,” the source said.

Marine Drive police, who logged an accidental death report, said the MP checked into the hotel Sunday night. According to police, the last time Delkar visited the Sea Green South Hotel was 10 years ago.

On Monday morning, when his driver went to the room, Delkar did not answer the doorbell, said an officer who asked not to be identified. “The driver then called his family members in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and asked if they had spoken to him.”

Later, the family called Delkar by phone, but he did not respond. The driver then asked the hotel staff to open the door.

“Since they could not open the door, the driver entered Delkar’s room from the balcony of the next room and found him hanging,” the officer said.

The hotel manager later informed Marine Drive police about the incident. Police said Delkar was rushed to JJ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead prior to admission. An autopsy was subsequently performed.

Police said they were taking statements from Delkar’s bodyguard and driver. A team from the Kalina Forensic Laboratory visited the site to collect samples. Senior police officers were also present at the scene.

Police said they would send a copy of his investigation report to Parliament as he is a MP.

Delkar is survived by his wife Kalaben Delkar, son Abhinav, and daughter Binita.
