CHENNAI: The landfall from the very severe cyclonic storm Nivar started Wednesday night, the Indian Meteorological Department tweeted.
The center of the cyclone will cross the coast near Puducherry within the next three hours with a wind speed of 120-130 km / h with gusts up to 145 km / h. S Balachandran, deputy director general of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) -Chennai, said the landfall would take place some 30 kilometers north of Puducherry. Landfall is happening nearby Marakkanam.
The center moved northwest at a speed of 15 km / h for the past six hours.
Nivar was located about 50 km east-southeast of Cuddalore and 40 km east-southeast of Puducherry at 10:30 p.m.
Experts said the system could move over land with a certain level of intensity for 12 to 18 hours after making landfall, meaning gusty winds and sudden heavy rains may continue Thursday.
“If the cyclone crosses on November 26 in the morning, it will completely weaken on November 27 at night,” said YEA Raj, former deputy director general of the Indian Meteorological Department. However, the time it takes for the system to move over the land depends on the availability of moisture on the land and terrain.
