Cyclone Nivar is likely to move northwest and cross the northern coast of Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, causing heavy rains in Chennai, Villupuram, Cuddalore and Puducherry, according to various media reports.

Currently a depression over the Bay of Bengal, Nivar is expected to intensify into a cyclone on Tuesday and will likely make landfall Wednesday afternoon between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu.

“Fishermen are advised not to venture into the Equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjacent central parts of the southern Bay of Bengal on November 22; over the southwest and central-west of the Bay of Bengal, the Gulf of Mannar and along and off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh during November 22-25, ”read a newsletter from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), according to The news minute.

IMD has also advised farmers to harvest their crops without delay in the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, as winds are expected to cross speeds of 100 km / h when making landfall, posing a danger of damage to crops. Heavy to extremely heavy rains are expected in isolated parts of these districts on Wednesday and Thursday, according to Deccan Chronicle.

The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) listed the districts and dates that heavy rain warnings were issued. Heavy rains are expected in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Karaikal on November 23, in isolated locations over Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Perambalu on November 24.

Isolated locations over Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Tiruchirappalli, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Puducherry, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur and Vellore districts may experience heavy to very heavy rains on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, extremely heavy rains are likely to occur in isolated locations over the Delta, Cuddalore, Kallakurchi, Puducherry, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Karaikal districts. Isolated locations over Trichy, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Dharmapuri, Salem, Krishnagiri, Sivagangai, Ramanad, Tirupathur, Ranipet, Vellore, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Chennai, and Chengalpattu are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains on November 25.

All departments, including revenue, disaster management, police, forestry, health services and rural development in Nagapattinam, are on high alert. All fishermen have been asked to return to shore.

Officials are concerned that it could drift slightly in their path like Cyclone Gaja, which could put the southern half of the Nagapattinam district at risk. The New Indian Express reported.
